Book Review: How to Set Up a Business in Kenya
Date Published: Wednesday August 26, 2009
Starting a business anywhere in the world is no easy task. The time, money and effort an entrepreneur needs to put into just having a legally operational business in place can easily weigh down any ingenious business idea. In Kenya, the red tape bureaucracies of setting up a business are a bit tedious, if not disheartening. Until recently, there has been no single source of information on how to set up a business in Kenya.

KENYA BUZZ: How to Set Up a Business in Kenya
By Nairobist Staff Writer
KenyaBuzz, a company that provides information on issues such as education, health, business, technology and entertainment, has published a book compiling all the steps of how to set up a business. Drawing from their previous experiences and extensive research, the authors of the book who are also the directors of KenyaBuzz, provide us with guide on the process of setting up a business in Kenya; A process that they themselves went through and found tedious especially after making several mistakes that cost them valuable amounts of time and money.
This 65 page book, full of illustrations, has given a detailed description of how to set up any form of business from a sole proprietorship, a partnership to a company (both local and foreign). It further details how to acquire an existing business. All this is backed up with estimated cost and average time it takes at each stage of the registration process.
The book includes samples of all the paperwork and tips on how to make the whole process easier and cost-effective. For example, it points out that most of the expenses incurred in setting up a business can be reduced considerably by doing them yourself rather than hiring an advocate or a consultant to do them for you. It also gives an analysis on how to open a bank account for your start-up business, some basic accounting requirements, taxation requirements and licenses from all relevant authorities.
This is one book I would recommend for any one planning to set up any form of business in Kenya. The only correction they may need to make is where they indicate the corporate tax rate as 32.5% (for foreign companies) instead of 30 % (for local companies). An e-version of the book would be a great addition too.
The book costs only Kshs. 500 and it can be bought at;
Nu Metro Stores, Westlands Sundries, Village market bookstore and Text book Centre.
